How the story begins
Chapter 1: The White Bear
Once upon a time, in the far north, there lived a poor farmer with many children. The youngest daughter was the kindest and the bravest of them all. One stormy autumn evening, there came three knocks at the door: tap, tap, tap. The father opened it, and there stood a great white bear. "Good evening," said the bear.
