How the story begins
Chapter 1: The Two Sisters
Once upon a time, in a little village, there lived a widow with two daughters. The elder daughter was just like her mother: proud, rude and very hard to please. The younger daughter was just like her father, who had been the kindest man in the village. She was gentle and polite to everyone, and lovely too.
