How the story begins
Chapter 1: The Shining Pebbles
At the edge of a great forest lived a poor woodcutter with his two children, Hansel and Gretel, and their stepmother. One year there was so little food that the stepmother said, “We must leave the children in the forest.” Hansel overheard her, so that night he crept outside and filled his pockets with shiny white pebbles. The next day, as they walked deep into the woods, he dropped the pebbles one by one along the path. When the children were left alone, they waited for the moon to rise, and the pebbles shone like silver coins, leading them safely home.
